History

Construction

Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High opened its doors in 1971; the school was built to serve the newly formed community of Miami Lakes, Florida as well as the city of Opa-Locka and parts of Hialeah, Florida. It is one of five high schools serving the densely populated Miami suburb of Hialeah, Florida.[1]

Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior has three student-run journalism programs, the yearbook, Aeneid, the monthly newspaper, The Trojan Times, and the TV Production program, Trojan TV.

Demographics

Hialeah-Miami Lakes is 70% Hispanic (of any race), 29% Black, 6% White non-Hispanic, and 3% Asian.[2]

Lakes offers more Advanced Placement courses in its curriculum than most of the schools in Dade county, numbering a total of 23 AP classes.

Achievements

Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior participates in the Florida High School Mock Trial Competition[3] and the National High School Mock Trial Competition. Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior received Miami-Dade County Championships in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 and placed 2nd in 1995. The school received Florida State Championships in 1991, 1992, 1993, and placed 2nd in 1994. Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior, under the instruction of Walter Gishler and Anthony DeFillippo, received National High School Mock Trial Honors placing 7th in 1991, 5th in 1993 and National Champions[4] in 1992.

In 2010, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior participated in the University of Florida Model United Nations competition (GATORMUN), taking home two first place awards and one third place. In 2010, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior participated in Florida International University Model United Nations competition (FIMUN), where it's delegates took home two second places.Adding to this Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High also competed in the 2010 Miami Dade One Acts Festival (Drama competition).They received an Excellent for their act, which the school had not won since 2006.

In 2009, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior won fourth place in the Miami Dade county geography bee competition.

In 2008 the National Ocean Sciences Bowl team won the regional Florida competition and advanced to the national competition in Washington D.C., being only the second team in Dade County to do so besides MAST Academy. In 2009, the school also became the first school in northern Dade County to be inducted into the "Fairchild Schools of Excellence Award" for meeting the Fairchild Challenge for five consecutive years, joining only nine other schools.

In 2006-2007, the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Theatre/Drama Department earned straight superior ratings at the Southeastern Theatre Conference. Representing not only their school but M-DCPS and the entire state of Florida as well, they earned straight superior ratings for the production of From the Mississippi Delta.[5] The Drama program continued its excellence throughout the 2007-2008 school year with its one act interpretation of Beckett's Waiting for Godot which earned an invitation to the prestigious 2009 Edinburgh Theater Festival in Scotland.
Adding to this Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High also competed in the 2010 Miami Dade One Acts Festival. They received an Excellent for their act, which the school had not won since 2006.
Hialeah-Miami Lakes is also renowned for its excellent Band program with the Marching, Jazz and Concert bands all earning straight superiors practically every season and the attainment of National Grand Champions of the band for seven straight years from 1999–2006 and as recently as 2008 and 2009 at Fiesta-val in Washington D.C. and New York City respectively. The chorus also attained the status of Grand Champions at the 2008 competition.

The Sapphires Dance Company, was invited to perform in the Orange Bowl. It was established on 2006 by Head Coach Michelle Pumariega, and assistant coach Kristy Llibre. During the 2008-2009 school year the team competed in Orlando, Florida where it took home numerous awards.

The Trojan JROTC program has received the Honor Unit With Distinction ranking, the highest honor a school can receive five times, in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2007 and 2008, the award is given in fall after thorough inspection and examination of the JROTC program and its members. In 2008 the Trojan JROTC scored a 98% in inspection, a first in the district.

Problems

For the 2007-2008 school year the school grade was a D, having missed a C grade by one point.[6] Since the 2008-2009 school year the school has no longer been in the Zone program and has gone back to regular scheduling.[7]

Athletics

Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School has won multiple Florida state sports championships, including the 1972 and 1973 undefeated Boys Waterpolo State Champions and the 1972 and 1973 undefeated Girls Waterpolo State Champions, the 1975 football state championship, four state championships in baseball (1977, 1979, 1980, and 1985), one in boys' soccer (1978), one in boys' golf (1978), one in boys' gymnastics (1978), one in boys' track (1984), one in boys' basketball (1986), and one in girls' soccer (1993), as well as a national baseball championship in 1985. Hialeah-Miami Lakes High was also awarded the Miami Herald All Sport Award for seven seasons (1977–78, 1979–80, 1980–81, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1984–85, and 1989–90) as well as the Miami Herald Major Sport Award (1977–78 and 1978–79).[8] Hialeah-Miami Lakes High shares a rivalry with Hialeah High and a less notable one with Barbara Goleman Senior High.

In 2008 and 2009 the boys volleyball, 2009 cross country and 2008-2009 basketball teams went on to clinch the district titles while the 2008-2009 wrestling team, 2008-2009 girls soccer team, 2009 boys tennis team and 2009 softball team were district runners-ups respectively.

The school's home stadium is Hendricks stadium in Milander Park (which it shares with Hialeah, Goleman, Miami Springs and American.)

Miami Lakes Middle School, North Dade, M.A. Milam K-8 Center, and Palm Springs Middle Schools feed into Hialeah-Miami Lakes. 1972 and 1973 Boys and Girls waterpolo State Champions with an undefeated season.
